\"\"<\/a>Amsterdam 2011<\/strong>
\nThe trip started badly. Pickpockets got into my wife\u2019s purse and stole 1000 euros, by unzipping TWO zippers! It must have happened either in Schiphol\u2019s train station, on the airport express or in Centraal Station. After the initial shock, my wife said, \u201cI won\u2019t let this ruin our trip.\u201d And to her credit, it didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

The B&B where we stayed at was a find. Hotel Brouwer is a 17th Century house facing the Singel Canal. History and scenery, at a price cheaper than Holiday Inn\u2019s. I went out at all hours to take pictures. From my window, I had bird-eye views of cyclists below.<\/p>\n

The highlight of Amsterdam for me was the Rijksmuseum. Those Dutch Masters! They were photographers without cameras. Vermeer\u2019s Milk Maid<\/em> is a Kodachrome slide taken with available light from a window. The two pictures I like most are streetscape: The Bend on Herengracht<\/em> by Gerrit Berckheyde and View of Houses in Delft<\/em> by Johannes Vermeer. These 400-year-old paintings could have been colour photographs taken only yesterday. Timeless!<\/p>\n
