Trials and Tribulations of our Open House Convenor

Izabel Dabrowski has this wonderful story related to the success of the RA Open House

I know. I know. Three weeks after the Open House and I’m just getting around to telling you about it? Well, I’ve got my excuses and I’m sticking to them!
I lost some Prints. Yes, Prints. The ones from the Print exhibit. Of course you remember the wonderful Print Exhibit. 85 prints, 33 photographers, 194 votes for the “Peoples’ Choice Award”. There was a runaway winner. You will have to attend the Christmas Party to find out who it is!
But back to missing Prints. How could I tell you about a fabulously successful Open House
…entertaining AV shows, our well equipped traditional dark room, or about the launch of our new, spacious Studio and all the workshops planned for its use. I couldn’t bring myself to talk about the Nature, Urban, Fine Arts and all those other sub groups and their plans for the coming year either. So what did I lose that caused me so much concern? Not my own prints. Not prints by photographers who don’t care if they get their prints back (there are 4 or 5 photographers who have not picked up their prints yet)No. I lost the print that was to be given away as a prize. Remember the ballot in the Print Exhibit room? “Vote for your favourite print. There will be draw and you may win a copy of that print”. That print. At the end of the evening, Hamid Bayanati’s ballot for David Wray’s print, “Eager Egret” was drawn . Since neither of them was there at the time, the print was put aside and………eventually found (It’s a good thing the RA doesn’t throw things out!)
All’s well that ends well. I would like to thank David Wray for generously donating his print and for putting up with me. And Hamid Bayanati finally received his print at the Oct 16 meeting. (Congratualtions Hamid).
However the next time I find my car keys in the sugar bowl, the RAPC will have to find another Open House Convener.
(Wow! there has to be a great story behind that last line).
