RA Photo Club Lighting Workshops

Workshops – Lighting 102 and Strobist 102
Over the past two weekends the Studio manager (Richard Whitbread) has held two all day lighting workshops. These were more advanced lighting workshops moving beyond the basic program of workshops 101 to more sophisticated setups including 3, 4 (or more) light groupings. The themes of the workshops could be summarized in two ways – creating more dramatic light and influencing light to do what you want it to do. For both the studio lighting 102 and the strobist 102 an emphasis was put on the use of light modifiers. These included: scrims; snoots; barn doors; umbrellas; and gels. Besides the modifiers time was spent on how to use the lights themselves to create the light you want – a more “science of lighting” approach. This was particularly important for the strobists. It is important to understand the strengths and limitations of your own flash what you can do to control your flash. For me it was important to gain an understanding of the equipment needed for off-camera flash (not just the modifiers but the mounting brackets, light stands and above all – gaffer tape). Many thanks to Richard and our models for the two days Christine and Angela.

  1. This workshops are a superb benefit for RA members - public classes or private instruction of this type would cost a small ransom, assuming you could even find them. We owe Richard a huge thanks
