Judging from the recent spate of awards shows for the performing arts, it must be
the season for recognition. And likewise, for the RA Photo Club, it’s time to
recognize contributions of volunteers who keep the club running. It’s just like the
Oscars, except without the golden statuettes, the red carpet, the fancy outfits, …
Actually, not much like the Oscars at all.
But, the recognition of the contributions of our volunteers is well-merited, and
YOU decide who should be nominated. The RA Photo Club is run by volunteers, about 75 right now. These people put in their time, knowledge, skill, care, and attention to make this Club fun for all of us. We thank these volunteers for making our Club what it is by nominating them for one of the Club’s awards, or for an RA Centre award.
Each year, there are two non-photographic awards that Club volunteers can earn.
Every second year (and this is one of those years), volunteers can also be
nominated for an RA Centre Award. I’ll describe the RAPC awards first.
The Outstanding Contribution Award, is for people who have
contributed (not money, but time and effort) to the RAPC during their first
five years of membership. Up to five can be given each year.
The Alice Gillies Award is for a volunteer who has been a member for
at least five years. Only one Alice Gillies Award a year is given. In both cases, we are looking for people who have made a significant contribution to the Club. For the Alice Gillies Award, we are also looking for people who have made a contribution to photography in general. The criteria for the Club awards are posted on the “Awards” page (listed on the right side of the Home page, under “Club Information”).
Club volunteers are also eligible this year for three RA Centre Awards.
The RA Centre’s Club Life Membership, recognizes a volunteer who
has demonstrated substantial contribution and commitment over a minimum of ten years. Photo Club Life Award winners no longer have to pay Club membership fees. No more than ten Life Memberships are in place at any time. No more than one person can be nominated in a given year. The RA Centre’s Association Life Membership Award recognizes people who have been members of the RA for 10 or more consecutive
years, and have demonstrated meritorious service to the RA. Winners no
longer have to pay RA Centre membership fees. This award is open to all
members of the RA, not just the RA Photo Club.
The RA Centre’s President’s Award recognizes a significant contribution to the RA. Nominees must be and have been a member of the RA for a minimum of 5 years and must have performed the service for which they are nominated for a minimum of 3 years.
So, it is up to you to nominate volunteers whose work has helped you and others
enjoy the Club. You don’t need to nominate someone for a specific award; you
just need to nominate them. The Committee will determine the award for which
they are eligible. The deadline is Tuesday, 2 April, 2013. Nominees will be asked to complete a standard RAPC resumé form; they will know from this that they have been nominated. The Awards Committee will then rank the nominees according to a point system and will make recommendations to the Club Executive, who approves the
winners. Club awards are presented at the RAPC Award Banquet in May. The RA Centre
awards are presented at a separate recognition ceremony in June. Please make your nominations using the yellow forms that will be available at the back of the room or by email to: awards@raphotoclub.ca
