Sheila Istead writes: We knew from the reactions of the visitors, it was going to be a close race for the “People’s Choice Award” as many visitors approached the organizers and stated they could not decide on a winner. All the photos were beautiful. Given there amazement many of the visitors suggested we have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. As the evening unfolded there were 164 ballots placed and at least 50 visitors who did not want a ballot but simply wanted to admire the prints. (There were also many who expressed amazement that our incredible facility existed in Ottawa). As it turned out the ballots indicated the difference between the winner and the next three places was very close and all who participated deserve a pat-on-the-back. As is our custom the winner will be announced at the RA Photo Club Christmas Party. The winner of the door prize is Randall Crawford. He wins a $50 gift certificate from Lab Works on Bank St. Congratulations to all the photographers who participated in this annual and amazing event. And thanks to all our volunteers that helped to make the Open House a success.
On a final note. It was near the end of the Open House and the show room full of prints was quiet. In the corner of my eye I could see a photographer kneeling down and speaking to a little boy and his Mother. He was explaining how he had made his abstract photo. The boy appeared to be hanging on his every word. That specific moment solidified the reason I went into photography.
