Studio Lighting 101

Setting the pose

Last Saturday, October 12, Richard Whitbread led the first of the workshops included in the Studio Lighting Techniques Series, Lighting 101. This workshop was directed primarily at those who are new to the studio and want to learn the basics about lighting and the necessary equipment. The workshop was in two parts: the first provided instruction on types and history of lighting, how to deconstruct a lighting set-up used in an existing photos, basic lighting ratios and using basic modifiers; the second was a practical illustration of how to set up a basic system of lighting using  one light with a reflector, and two lights. There was also instruction on how set the equipment (lights etc), use the trigger/receiver, use a light meter, when to use a hair light and many other useful tips and tricks of the studio.
This was a full-day workshop and for the price it is an absolute steal. Any club member who has an interest in learning about studio equipment and lighting techniques should take advantage of this marvelous opportunity next time Richard makes it available. Natalie was our model for most of the day and showed great patience as we moved through the workshop. Thank you Richard and Natalie.
