Bill Woodley At the (New York) Galleries

Lewis HineLewis W. Hine, Midnight at the Brooklyn Bridge, 1906.

I just got back from spending most of a week in New York, and during that time I was able to see several good photo shows — there were probably 100 others that I missed, but here are some ideas you might consider if you are in New York, or want to look at them online. As many club members know, I really like black and white, so please excuse my emphasis on older stuff:

1. Lewis Hines at the International Center of Photography – a major exhibition of about 300 black and white prints -highly recommended.

2. Walker Evans at MOMA – about 40 black and white prints from the 1930s

3. War Photography, at the Brooklyn Museum – a mammoth exhibition of images from over 60 armed conflicts from the civil war to present day, a well balanced comprehensive presentation including some German and Japanese images from WWII.

4. Brett Weston – New York, City of Abstractions – this one is free, at 1285 Avenue of the Americas Art Gallery – 100 black & white prints.

5. Vivian Maier: Self Portrait at the Greenberg Gallery – 30 black & white self portraits (plus work of several other photographers) – also free, E57th street.

6. Simen Johan, Milo Gallery – large digitally manipulated colour prints of animals, the latest part of an ongoing series, free at the Milo Gallery on 10th Av.
