Bruno Di Lalla (Competitions Committee Chair) writes:

The Bruce Wilson Memorial Competition was held at the Canada Room of the RA Photo Club on Tuesday May 3rd 2011. This competition is held in memory of the late Bruce Wilson, a Senior member of the Club and former Competitions Manager who died in January 1998 at much too young an age. Bruce earned his promotion to the Senior level mostly with high quality black and white prints.

Our distinguished judge for the evening was Jim Borcoman; Dr. Borcoman’s resume is impressive to say the least, and following are some of the highlights of his accomplishments:

National Gallery of Canada, 1960-1994: Education officer, Director of Exhibitions, Senior Curator of Photographs, Chairman of department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs.
Founded the National Gallery’s Photographs Collection in 1967
Organized approximately 46 exhibitions
Doctor of Fine Arts, Carleton University, 1996
Doctor of Laws, Concordia University, 1996
Author of many publications

15 participants chose to present their work, namely:

Izabel Dabrowski
Mark Guzewski
Howard Sandler
Luc Delorme
Roger Miller
Robert Laramée
Marc Gaudet
Aimee Britten
Jim Lamont
Philippe Holness
David Clow
Abigail Gossage
Jayni Bloch
Gerald Bloch
Tony Sakalauskas

Participant’s entries consisted of 5 Black & White prints. The five prints had to be related to each other in some way, e.g., the prints could be related either as a “series” connected to each other in some way or as a “sequence” with a story line; The judge had the liberty of determining that relation.

Early in the evening, Jim Borcoman stated that he was faced with quality work and that all participants were winners; from his point of view, art need not be judged but admired for its qualities. Mr Borcoman gave the audience a thorough analysis of his views of series and sequence and expressed his appreciation of each piece of work to the audience.

While everyone wins for participating, Jim Borcoman declared that the series from Mark Guzewski had the most impact on him. Mark Guzewski will be awarded the Bruce Wilson Memorial Competition trophy and plaque which will be presented to him at the RA Photo Club’s Annual Awards Banquet.

Finally, a number of pieces were selected as runners up, namely work from Marc Gaudet, Jayni Bloch, Gerald Bloch, and Luc Delorme.

This concluded the 2010-2011 competition season; thanks to everyone who participated in this competition and in competitions throughout the year! The Competition Committee is now hard at work to select the topics for next season, which will be announced at the banquet, on our web site and on this blog; stay tuned!

I would like to thank the Competition Committee for their support throughout the year, and I look forward to another great season!
