Holga Project

By John Healy

Here’s a creative idea.

Ted Forbes, who is an award winning photographer, video producer and multi-media producer for the Dallas Museum of Art, has always been intrigued by the artistic quality of the Holga 120N camera. His educational video podcast, The Art of Photography, has a few episodes dedicated to this famous toy camera and the wonderful results that creative people have been able to achieve since its introduction in the early 1980’s.

Mr Forbes’s idea is to mail out 10 new Holga cameras loaded with Fuji ISO 400 colour film. Each camera will go to three people in three different regions with the instruction to shoot only 4 exposures of the 12 medium format frames based on a theme from a song lyric. The returned exposed frames will be developed, scanned and loaded up to a new web site and there is talk of a book if all goes according to plan.

Holga number 1’s first stop is Ottawa. RA member, John Healey will interpret the Beatle’s lyric “Something in the way she moves” and then send the toy camera off to the next location in Canada. He plans to post his shots on his Flickr photoblog as soon as they are sent back from Mr. Forbes.

He’ll keep us posted of any progress.
