From Bill Blackstone:
Do you enjoy creating high quality images in low light conditions with fast lenses and high ISOs? Do you enjoy Chamber Music?
The 2011 Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival will take place from July 23 to August 8 with more than 90 performances being presented at various venues in the central Ottawa area, as well as several outdoor locations. The RAPC Urban Group is undertaking to arrange for up to 12 volunteer photographers to cover these concerts and provide images to the Ottawa Chamber Music Society (OCMS) for its use in promoting and publicizing Chamberfest and other activities of the Society.
Concert conditions:
Most concerts are traditional formal presentations of chamber music by a small number of performers. For information on Chamberfest see: http://www.ottawachamberfest.com/
While there are some outdoor performances, most concerts take place in downtown churches where conditions for photography are quite challenging. Light is usually very poor, so very quiet or muffled DSLRs with fast lenses (f/2.8 or better), slow shutter speeds and high ISOs are generally the order of the day. Tripods or monopods are useful and flash is not allowed. No Point-and-Shoots please. Indoor daytime concerts may have reasonable natural light (except for venues like the Church of St. John the Evangelist) and there are even performances at Beechwood Cemetery, the Rideau Canal the grounds of Rideau Hall and in the ByWard Market.
Images:
Photographers choose a few of their best images to provide to OCMS. Photographers will be asked to upload low res web-size (640 px long side, watermarked if desired) images directly to OCMS’s photo website as soon as possible following the concert and to also provide separate high res versions of the photos for possible use in a brochure or other form of publicity. Upload procedures will be confirmed at a later date.
How to get involved:
Send an email to the RAPC Coordinator for the Chamber Music Festival, Bill Blackstone, at Bill@BlackstonePhoto.ca expressing your interest in shooting the Festival. You will be sent the OCMS Event Photographer’s Undertaking which you will have to sign prior to receiving a Media Pass. The Undertaking sets out the terms under which RAPC provides photographers to shoot festivals, and also includes guidelines specific to OCMS.
The schedule of concerts is attached in Word format and complete details are available at http://www.ottawachamberfest.com/concerts (Click on List All) http://www.ottawachamberfest.com/Review the attached concert schedule, select the concerts that you are interested in shooting and put your initials in the cell of the event that you wish to shoot. Then email the schedule to Bill Blackstone at Bill@BlackstonePhoto.ca We want to provide quality coverage of as many events as possible so please also indicate if and when you will be available to shoot events other than those on your wish list. We especially need photographers who can shoot the daytime, weekday events. In order to balance our coverage, we may be unable to assign you to an event of your choice or we may have to assign you to a concert that is not on your wish list.
Media Passes will be assigned based on our assessment of RAPC’s ability to fulfill our commitment to provide maximum coverage of the concerts. Photographers will be notified as soon as possible if and when a pass will be available.
