RAPC Members Win 2011 CAPA Awards

Abigail Gossage’s poignantly beautiful Varanasi, the Holy City, won the Silver Certificate (Travel Essays) in the 2011 Digital AV Competition organised by the Canadian Association of Photographic Art (CAPA).

Varanasi, the Holy City, remains a city steeped in religious fervour. While tourists are very welcome, it is a city primarily for pilgrims, many of whom come to Varanasi solely so that they can die in a holy place.

Lacking CAPA membership and with the deadline only days away, Wita Schliewen and Chak Wong asked RA Photo Club’s executives if they could compete under RAPC banner. Their request was readily approved. The RAPC entry, Up the Nile, won the Gold Certificate (Travel Essays).

Luxor, Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae, Aswan…all fabled names, and then there is the Nile itself…golden brown deserts and lush green oases come down to the water edge…

Both AVs were shown in Clark Hall, RA Centre, on March 22 2011, during Jim Robertson’s Annual AV Showcase. They will be shown again on Open House Night, September 27. Early versions of the respective CAPA winners can also be viewed on Youtube:
