Program – 12 October – Louis Helbig

Louis Helbig lecture on “Beautiful Destruction – Alberta Tar Sands Aerial Photographs”

Ottawa based artist and aerial photographer Louis Helbig will discuss” Beautiful Destruction – Alberta Tar Sands Aerial Photographs” which ran at the Ottawa City Hall Public Gallery from July until Sept this year. Originally photographed in August 2008 when he and his partner flew across the country in their antique 1946 Luscombe aircraft, images from this project are now being exhibited and published internationally, as well as being sold as limited edition prints. Louis will discuss different aspects of “Beautiful Destruction” ranging from the creative to the political. Although the Canadian tar sands are the biggest source of oil for the USA, it is largely out of sight and until recently largely out of mind in both countries. Louis’  brings an aesthetic perspective to the issue, leaving viewers to make up their own minds about what they might see in the imagery.

A slide show and short lecture will be followed by a Q and A session where audience participation is encouraged.

  2. I was a city hall yesterday and I was soooooooo impressed with the works on display.

I left a long note in the guest book for Louis praising his wonderful talents.

Since much of the work is ariel photography it is not something we routinely see or practice it is well worth the visit. Plus it is FREE - finally a positive use of tax dollars
