Slide Showcase 12 October

From Ed Overstreet, Slide Showcase Coordinator (rather long post so please read it all, there are a lot of details to observe):

The first Slide Showcase will be displayed after the announcements at the club meeting on October 12.  The showcase will run for 10-15 minutes, depending on the number of submissions.

For those of you who are new to the club, Slide Showcases are a roughly-monthly opportunity for members to have six of their images shown to the club at the beginning of a meeting, with no commentary, comparisons, scoring or awards.  If you have images you’d like to share with members in a non-competitive format, this is for you.

Details about how to submit an entry, and the technical requirements for the slides, may be found at the “Slide Showcase” links on the home page of the club website (www.raphotoclub.ca) along the right side of that page, about halfway down.  You should download and read the Submission Guidelines document linked at the bottom of the first link; this document has not been updated from last year, but for October the guidelines are the same as last year.

You must be logged into the website in order to access these links.

Hand-in deadlines are at the break at this Tuesday’s meeting (for film slides and digital slides on CD, the latter option provided only for members who don’t have internet access) or Thursday noon (sharp) for digital slides submitted via the submission page also linked from the home page.  Digital slides must be in JPG format and comply with certain restrictions spelled out in the guidelines and on the submission page; 35mm film slides are also welcome, if marked as directed in the guidelines.  If you have a few words you’d like me to broadcast with your slides, please submit these separately by email to slideshowcase@raphotoclub.ca — see the guidelines document for limitations on the number of words.  (Do NOT submit your digital slides themselves by email; they will only be accepted on CD or via the website submission page.)

Starting in November, there will be some additional options that I will announce about mid-October, once the guidelines document has been updated appropriately.  These options will include having a panorama-format JPG panned on-screen during presentation, or submitting a short video clip instead of six slides (which will include the option of  submitting a short AV show with slides set to music or other sound track of your choice, if you know how to produce such a show in a video format such as MPG or MOV).  Watch for my email and the revised guidelines document in about two weeks, for details.

We’re looking forward to seeing your images!

Addendum received 5/10/10

Sorry for the extra email, but I just realized that my previous email concerning the October Showcase doesn’t take into account some very useful enhancements to the website submission page that John Elliott, our webmaster, very kindly developed since last year.

If you have a title or comments that you wish to submit with your digital images, please use the box at the bottom of the submission page on the website, not an email.  If you’re submitting digital images on a CD because you don’t have internet access, or if you’re submitting film slides tonight, THEN please submit title or comments via email as suggested in my previous email to the announce list.

Also, if you haven’t already submitted a photo of yourself for inclusion in the show (to help audience members identify you if they want to speak to you about your images), please upload it at the appropriate place near the bottom of the submission page.  (If you’re submitting via a CD, just burn the photo to the CD; film-slide submitters will unfortunately need to re-submit the same film slide of themselves with each submission.)  Submission of a photo of yourself is optional but strongly encouraged.

My apologies to John for having forgotten these enhancements which he and I had discussed a few months ago.  My sole excuse is that I must still be a bit jet-lagged from my return last weekend from a four-week trip to Europe (there have been other examples of dumb things I’ve done since returning, which I won’t bore you with …)
