Iron Ore Dock
The Great Lakes
Photography Exhibition by Mark Schacter
Ottawa Art Gallery, Arts Court Building, 2 Daly Street
Until February 25, 2012
Between April and October 2011 I traveled by car and ship around the Great Lakes gathering material for a portrait of the Lakes and their surrounding cities, towns, ports, industrial zones and landscapes. More than 300 years of resource extraction, industrialization and urbanization have irreparably damaged the Great Lakes and the land around them. And yet if you see the Lakes in the right place and at the right time, they still give the impression of being untouched and unchangeable.
The exhibition features photographs from my forthcoming book to be published in October by Fifth House.
