ZYGMUNT JAKUBEK
Zygmunt Jakubek’s photography focuses on visual abstraction and interplay of color and shape. His color-rich photographic creations are inspired by art and artistic credo of Wassily Kandinsky, who once said: “Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.” Zygmunt’s photography is frequently guided by his scientific background in photophysics. He is always on a lookout for false perspective effects to create eye-fooling Escheresque images, reflections in curved surfaces to find magic in visually abstracted ordinary scenes, or projected shadows to reveal hidden dimensions. Being married to an avid flower painter, Zygmunt has also developed interest in nature macro photography.

Zygmunt has frequently shown his images in local galleries and exhibitions. He participated in the Mayor’s Art Festival commemorating 150th birthday of the City of Ottawa and featuring 150 local artists, shown his images in the City of Ottawa Centerpointe Theatre Gallery together with three other RA Photo Club members, and every year in June opens his studio to visitors during the Orleans Art Studios Tour. For several years, Zygmunt was a member of the RA Photo Club and a regular participant in the Club competitions at the Senior level. For three years, he edited the RA Photo Club newsletter.

Zygmunt Jakubek was born in Poland and, before arriving to Canada in 1997, had also lived and worked in the USA, Japan, China, and France. He has extensively traveled around the world visiting nearly 60 countries. His travel photos and travel stories have been published in magazines in Poland, the USA, Japan, and Singapore. Zygmunt has a M.S. degree in physics from the Jagiellonian University (Cracow, Poland) and a Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, MA). When not creating new images, he works as a research scientist at the National Research Council, where he develops superresolution fluorescence microscopy methods and techniques and studies nanomaterials and biomolecular interactions. He is also an adjunct professor at McMaster University (Hamilton), where for several years he has been a guest lecturer on photophysics of nanoarchitectures and metamaterials.
